My name is Michael Bevan and I’m a third generation grower in the West Midlands. I follow my grandfather and father as a blackcurrant grower and now farm with my two sons, George and Tom.
How long have you been growing blackcurrants?
Over 50 years.
What varieties do you grow and in what region?
We grow Ben Garin, Ben Hope, Ben Strava, Ben Alder and Ben Tirran.
How much do you harvest annually and where do they go?
All our blackcurrants go to Ribena.
What else do you grow?
Cereals and cider apples.
Why do you love growing blackcurrants?
It’s very rewarding, detailed and a niche market. We’re proud to supply a well known brand.
Can you give one tip that people could benefit from when growing blackcurrants?
Attention to detail is essential.
Can you tell us about some of the ways in which you manage the land sustainably?
Rotating the crops, keeping grass headlands and alleyways to reduce erosion.

Jam, cheesecake and Ribena!
